CCTV vs Electric Fence: Which Should You Install First?

If budget or timing means you can only tackle one security upgrade this year, it’s worth understanding what each option actually does, rather than assuming more expensive automatically means more effective.

Electric fencing provides a physical, immediate deterrent along your property’s perimeter, while CCTV provides visibility, evidence and remote monitoring but doesn’t physically stop anyone. For most Durban homes, the better first investment depends on whether your priority is prevention at the boundary or visibility and evidence across the whole property, including entrances a fence can’t cover.

What Electric Fencing Does Well

An energized fence along your boundary wall is a direct physical deterrent. It requires no monitoring or app-checking to work, and a compliant system triggers an audible alarm the moment it’s tripped. For properties where the main risk is someone climbing over a boundary wall, this addresses the problem at the exact point of entry.

What Electric Fencing Doesn’t Cover

A fence only protects the perimeter it’s installed on. It doesn’t help with gate access points, doesn’t record anything for later review, and provides no visibility into what’s happening inside the property line, such as around a garage, side entrance, or driveway.

What CCTV Does Well

Cameras give you visibility you wouldn’t otherwise have: who came to the gate, what happened in the driveway, whether a delivery or visitor left again promptly. With remote app viewing, you can check in on your property from anywhere, and recorded footage is genuinely useful evidence if an incident does occur.

What CCTV Doesn’t Cover

The Case for Doing Both, in Stages
